Breast screening / Mammograms

Breast screening is a vital health service that aims to detect breast cancer at an early stage. You are more likely to survive breast cancer if it is found early, and it is still small. Mammograms are used to help detect breast cancer and show changes inside a breast before they can be felt.

In New Zealand, the National Breast Screening Programme, BreastScreen Aotearoa, provides free mammograms every two years for women aged between 45 and 69 years.

You can book your free mammogram with BreastScreen Aotearoa! Freephone 0800 270 200.

What is breast screening?

Breast screening involves using mammography, an X-ray examination of the breasts, to detect any unusual changes or early signs of cancer that may not be visible or felt.

Early detection through regular screening is crucial, as it can identify cancers before symptoms develop, allowing for more effective and less invasive treatment options.

Who should get screened?

  • Women aged 45-69 years: Free screening mammograms are available every two years.
  • If you have a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors, it is advisable to discuss these with your healthcare provider, as you may need to start screening earlier or have it done more frequently.

Benefits of regular screening

  • Early detection: Finding breast cancer early means a higher likelihood of successful treatment.
  • Better outcomes: Early-stage cancers are often easier and less costly to treat.
  • Peace of mind: Regular screening can alleviate worries by confirming that everything is normal.
